Govt committed to addressing Bancharedanda people’s concern: Minister Jhankri

Kathmandu: Minister for Urban Development Ram Kumari Jhankri has said the government would address the concern shown by the people affected by the landfill site of Bancharedanda.

Addressing an all-side discussion in the ministry on Wednesday, she said the locals near the landfill site had an important role in the management of the landfill so their concern could not be ignored. “It is our common responsibility to manage well the landfill site,” she said, expressing hope that the Bancharedanda landfill would help a lot in the management of Kathmandu Valley waste.

The government therefore can’t flout local’s demand, she stressed. On the occasion, lawmaker elected from Dhading district Bhumi Tripathi suggested that the affected lands by the project should be acquired as per the suggestion of the technical team.

Lawmaker from Nuwakot, Hit BahadurTamang, viewed the long term solution should be sought for the management of waste in Bancharedanda. He suggested that local governments should be made more responsible for waste management.

Mayor at Dhading Dhunibeshi Municipality Balkrishna Acharya said it is a common responsibility of all sides for the effective management of the landfill site at Bancharedanda.

Kakani Rural Municipality Chairperson Suman Tamang blamed the government for only making policy but failing to implement it well. According to him, it is the government’s responsibility to address the Bancharedand people’s need for education, health and employment.

The discussion was attended by various public officials including Secretary Dr Ramesh Prasad Singh, Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, Gobinda Prasad Rijal, project chief of Bancharedanda landfill site, Rabindra Bohara, chief administration officer of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Loknath Poudel, police officials, people’s representatives from Kanani Rural Municipality, and Dhunibesi Municipality and locals affected by the Bancharedanda landfill site
