South Asian Regional Conference on global solidarity to end violence against women commencing Tuesday

Kathmandu: A Two-Day South Asian Regional Conference is going to be held from 15-16th of March in Kathmandu, aiming to create global solidarity to end all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls.

During a press meet organized on Monday, it was informed that the Conference would stress revealing different aspects of Violence against women and girls and how to make violence affected women’s access to justice.

Speaking at the press meet, Chairperson of National Women Rights Commission Kamala Parajuli said that girls, women with disability, sexual minorities and women from marginalized communities are being mostly affected by the violence.

She added that the violence has been increased globally compared to the past and the structure of violence has also been changed.

Likewise, she said many forms of violence such as digital violence, violence created due to living together, violence against women in the entertainment sector have not been addressed.

Similarly, actions such as feticide on the basis of gender, violence against old-aged women should be immediately addressed and resolved.

Speaking at the same program, a member of the National Human Rights Commission Lily Thapa has said that violence against women is a severe violation of Human Rights and the conference will discuss how the violence against women and girls would be addressed globally.

The Conference which will be jointly organized by National Human Rights Commission, National Women Commission, Women NGO Federation and Every Woman Treaty would address the Violence against Women through a global treaty that has not been addressed by CEDAW, said Dr Sashi Adhikary, President at Women NGO Federation.

Writer and Gender Right Activist Meera Khanna from India said the deeply rooted patriarchal structure in our society has increased the violence against women and girls. She also said that no family and society can move forward by violating Women’s Rights.

Various speakers including CEO at Every Woman, Lisa Shannon, Board of Governer Member of Aurat Foundation Dr Alia Khan, Srilanka’s peace activist Vishala Dharmadasa, Former CEDAW Committee member Ferdus Aura Begam from Bangladesh among others said that the conference would be helpful to create solidarity to end violence against women and girls.

The Conference will be attended by Women Human Rights Activists and Writer from South Asia and America.
