Maghe Sankranti being observed today; President Bhandari extends best wishes

January 15, Kathmandu: Maghe Sankranti or Makar Sankranti is being celebrated throughout the country today. It is being observed by taking holy dips in rivers and ponds, worshipping at various temples and savouring delicacies like ghee, yam, khichadi and sweets like Chaku and sweets made of sesame and molasses.

As per the astrological chart, the Makar Sankranti has special significance- from this day onwards the sun starts its ascendancy and enters into the northern hemisphere.

 On this day, the sun moves from the tropic of Sagittarius to the tropic of Capricorn. It is believed that the days get longer and nights shorter from today itself.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari has extended best wishes to all Nepalis sisters and brothers at home and abroad on the occasion of the Maghe Sakranti today. President Bhandari wished all Nepalis health, happiness, peace and prosperity.

Stating that the Maghe Sankranti is being observed with fervour among various ethnicities while Tharus mark the day as the New Year, President Bhandari viewed that the Maghi festival contributes to fostering national unity.

The Head of the State urged all the Nepalis to take care of their health and well being and celebrate the festival adhering to health safety protocols against COVID-19.
