Government committed to press freedom, says newly-appointed communication Minister Karki

October 8, Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki assumed the office on Friday.

Taking charge of the ministry, newly-appointed minister Karki endorsed the decision of publishing the annual progress review through digital signature.

On the occasion, he said as the free press can only safeguard democracy, the incumbent government would highly recognize press freedom with commitment.

The government would work as per the people’s aspirations by encouraging the journalism sector to grow, he said.

“The optimum development of information technology is a must for making the government performance well-managed, transparent and effective.

Citizen supremacy is a primary condition in democracy; it is the government’s responsibility to provide service to the citizens.

There is always a role of the press sector to keep vigil at the government when the latter does wrong. The government would incentivize the press to discharge the role”.

Noting that the government would work to establish citizen supremacy and information as the rights of all, he pledged to enable the ministry of communications and information technology to translate the challenge as an opportunity.

On this occasion, Ministry Secretary Dr Baikuntha Aryal briefed the newly-appointed minister about the works and responsibilities of the ministry.

Earlier, Minister Karki had taken ministerial leadership of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and Ministry of Finance.

He is the elected parliament member from Sunsari electoral constituency-4.

He had also served the Nepal Student Union, the student wing of the Nepali Congress, as the President in 2039 BS.
