Saptakoshi River erodes embankment in Udayapur and Sunsari affecting 2 thousand households
Udayapur/Sunsari: The swollen Sapta Koshi River has started to erode its banks affecting more than two thousand households in Udayapur and Sunsari.
Udayapur Chief District Officer Birendra Kumar Yadav said about 15 hundred families of Belaka Municipality ward numbers 1, 2, 3, 8, and 9 have been affected as the Kishi River changed its track.
Talking to Radio Nepal he said the affected people were housed in various public buildings. CDO Yadav also said the rescue team of the Armed Police Force and other security bodies had been actively working in the rescue effort. He also confirmed that there had been no human and livestock causalities.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand has directed the concerned stakeholders to expedite rescue and relief efforts in the Koshi flood-affected areas.
The Home Ministry said the relocation of the people in the flood-affected areas had started as the Koshi River eroded about 50 meters of land from its banks.
Home Minister Khand also asked the subordinate bodies to ensure a temporary and permanent settlement for the affected people and provide treatment for the injured ones.
Today itself, Home Minister Khand talked with Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Narayan Khadka about possible measures to address the Koshi erosion problem.
Likewise, when the Koshi River breached its embankment at Dumribot in Belaka municipality of Uyadpur, about five hundred people have been stranded at Sri Lanka Tapu of Baharakshetra of Sunsari.
Sunsari Chief District Officer Indra Dev Yadav confirmed the breach of the embankment saying the people on Sri Lanka Tapu are safe.
