63 percent of violence against women are domestic violence

November 26, Kathmandu: A total of 1 thousand 7 hundred and 72 incidents of violence against women have been documented in Nepal this year.

Among the violence-based incidents, 63 percent of the incidents have been reported as domestic violence and the most of committers are reported to have been intimate partners and family members.

The data has been revealed during a book named ” Anweshi” launch program, organized on the occasion of start of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign by Women’s Rehabilitation Center (WOREC) Nepal on Thursday at the National Human Right’s Commission.

The incidents of domestic violence against women have been followed by social violence, rape, attempted rape, sexual violence, trafficking, murder, attempt to murder, suicide, attempt to suicide, and cybercrime among others.

Similarly, the data revealed in the book has shown that among the total violence-based incidents, only 6 hundred and 41 incidents have been published in media.

Likewise, the prohibition measures imposed to curb down effect of covid-19 have increased the violence-based incidents by 11 percent.

The group has also categorized the age group of the affected one which is highest in 16 to 25 years age group women followed by 26 to 35 years age group women whereas highest numbers violence committers are of   17-45 years age group. The book has stated that the causes of domestic-based violence are dowry, giving birth to daughters, infertility, and childlessness among others and this has impacted women’s mental, physical and emotional well-being. In many cases, these women have even been deprived of basic rights enshrined in the constitution of Nepal.

Speaking at the program, Women’s human rights activist and founder of WOREC Nepal, Dr. Renu Adhikari said that stereotyped cultures, values, and standards set by the `patriarchal structure had been causing the surge in the cases of gender-based violence.

Similarly, she also urged the concerned stakeholders to assess the situation of the violence and monitor whether the affected ones have been getting the rights provided by the state.
