UN recommends Nepal to graduate to Developing nation

February 27, Kathmandu: The United Nations Committee for Development Policy (CDP) has recommended for Nepal’s graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category with preparatory period of five years.

In a statement on Friday, the permanent mission of Nepal to United Nations states that the CDP, in its triennial review held from the 22nd  to 26th of February recommended Nepal’s graduation.

The CDP evaluates Gross National Income per capita, Human Assets Index, and Economic and Environmental Vulnerability Index for the graduation of a country.

Out of these three indices, Nepal met the thresholds for the latter two.

After full graduation in 2026, Nepal will lose the benefits given to the least developed countries resulting in aid cuts. However, it could boost the self-confidence of the country and may help bring in Foreign Direct investments to expand businesses.
