UNGA elects Nepal to UN Human Rights Council

October 14, United Nations: Nepal has been re-elected to the United Nation Human Rights Council.
The 193-member United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday elected Nepal for a three-year- tenure at the Human Rights Council.
This is Nepal’s second term at the Council.
Nepal was among five countries along with Senegal, Pakistan, Ukraine, and Mexico to be re-elected at the council.
Along with Nepal, U.N. General Assembly also elected China, Russia, Cuba, France, and Britain, among other countries to the 47-member council.
The candidates are elected from the different geographical clusters to ensure even representation. Nepal was elected from the Asia-Pacific region.
Five countries had vied for the four seats assigned for the Asia-Pacific region.
Nepal received 150 votes, while Pakistan received 169 votes, Uzbekistan – 164, China – 139, with Saudi Arabia failing to make it to the Human Rights Council with 90 votes.
