Cooperation of all needed to combat digital violence: Minister Badi

Kathmandu: Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security, Sita Badi, has stressed the need for cooperation of all to control digital violence against women and children.

During the discussion about the situation of social networking sites in the Women and Social Affairs Committee under the House of Representatives on Monday, Minister Badi emphasised the need to regulate social platforms.

Stating that women and children have been disproportionately affected by digital violence, she instructed the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police to make the complaint registration system more accessible and effective.

Similarly, Committee President Aakriti Awasthi stressed the need to formulate comprehensive legislation on digital violence in view of its growing prevalence.

“The situation of digital violence is becoming increasingly serious. An integrated law is needed to address it,” she said.

Likewise, Home Ministry Secretary Raj Kumar Shrestha underscored the need to strengthen the country’s cyber security system and promote digital literacy. A report prepared by the Cyber Bureau was also presented at the meeting.

On the occasion, Inspector General of Nepal Police Dan Bahadur Karki said cyber security challenges are becoming increasingly complex. He stressed the need to further strengthen the Cyber Bureau to ensure prompt handling of cybercrime complaints.

Karki also emphasised the timely formulation of laws, expansion of the police network and greater public awareness to help curb cybercrime.
