Foreign Affairs Minister Khanal meets Tuvalu, Tonga and Mauritius leaders
Kathmandu: Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has held separate meetings with leaders of Tuvalu, Tonga and Mauritius during his visit to Tuvalu for the Pre-COP Leaders’ Event.
Khanal met Tuvalu Prime Minister Feleti Teo and discussed the shared climate risks faced by mountainous countries and small island nations. He stressed the need to strengthen cooperation on climate action.
He also met Tonga Prime Minister Fatafehi Fakafanua and Mauritius President Dharamveer Gokhool, with discussions focusing on climate change and cooperation in international forums.
During a visit to Tuvalu’s Coastal Adaptation Project, the Nepali delegation observed measures being taken to address sea-level rise and coastal impacts.
Khanal said the rapid melting of Himalayan glaciers and rising sea levels are closely connected. He called for greater cooperation between mountain and small-island countries, including efforts to secure timely, adequate and equitable climate finance.
