Court orders release of Province Assembly Member Rekha Sharma

Kathmandu, April 5 — The Kathmandu District Court has ordered the release of Rekha Sharma from police custody.

A bench led by District Judge Jagat Paudel issued the order on Sunday, stating that there were no sufficient grounds to keep Sharma in detention in connection with a child labour case.

The court noted that the matter had already been settled, and there was no legal basis to continue holding the defendant. It also upheld earlier decisions by the District Government Attorney’s Office in Kathmandu and the High Government Attorney’s Office in Patan, which had chosen not to move forward with the case.

Earlier, on May 30, 2025, the Office of the Attorney General had decided not to prosecute Sharma on the child labour charge, citing a lack of grounds.

Following the court’s order, Sharma has been released from custody.
