Supreme Court orders release of journalist Shrestha

Kathmandu: The Supreme Court has issued a mandamus order to release Chief Editor of Janaastha Weekly, Kishor Shrestha.

A division bench of Justices Nahakul Subedi and Baburam Dhakal, hearing the case on Monday, ordered the release of Shrestha, arguing that there was no reason to continue his judicial detention.

The mandamus order was issued to the District Police Range, Kathmandu, one of the defendants, in response to a habeas corpus case filed by his wife, Saraswati Shrestha.

After hearing the same petition, a single bench of Justice Bal Krishna Dhakal had ordered journalist Shrestha to be produced in court along with the seized materials.

The court has also ordered the return of the CPU, laptop, iPad and mobile phone seized from journalist Shrestha’s house and office.
