Government steps up efforts to reduce electricity tariffs

Kathmandu: The government has intensified preparations to reduce electricity tariffs for consumers and industries.

A committee formed on July 29 on the proposal of Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha is reviewing ways to provide electricity at subsidised rates.

The committee, coordinated by Nepal Electricity Authority Board Member Anshu Kiran Shahi, includes representatives from the Energy Ministry, the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, energy experts, consumers and financial experts.

The committee is meeting at the Energy Ministry today to discuss introducing seasonal tariffs, particularly during the rainy season when electricity production exceeds domestic demand.

Coordinator Shahi said the plan aims to increase electricity consumption and reduce losses caused by surplus power.

Preparations are also underway to provide electricity concessions to industries, with discussions on encouraging them to pass the benefits on to consumers through lower prices.
