Debts that negatively affect the nation should not be accepted: NC President Deuba
Patan (Lalitpur): Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that we should not take loans that harm the nation.
Also, the former prime minister, Deuba was speaking at a dialogue on ‘Economics and politics of foreign aid in Nepal’ organized by the party’s Economic Policy and Planning Department at the central office in Sanepa earlier today. He emphasized that when taking a loan the country should not be negatively burdened.
On a different note, Deuba said that it is not the job of the government to indulge in business and open industries. Vice-president Dhanraj Gurung emphasized that the tendency to take loans from donor agencies and not implement them should be ended. General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa said that a debate shall be carried out among all the political parties and the Parliament regarding the country’s economic policy after broadening the discussion within the party.
‘Economy should be debated based on facts and evidence, we should make decisions based on priorities and needs and not based on political influences,’ Thapa said.
The head of the department and the central member of the party, Professor Dr Govindaraj Pokharel, while analyzing the situation of foreign aid, shared that currently, the foreign debt in Nepal is around 1,253 billion rupees.
On the occasion, former Vice Chair of National Planning Commission Meen Bahadur Shrestha, economist Dr Dilliraj Khanal, former Finance Secretary Rameshwar Khanal, professor of Economics at Tribhuvan University Sanjay Dahal, economist Dr Semant Dahal and Dr Indra Kumari Adhikari presented working papers based on the country’s foreign economic policy.
