Gaza ceasefire delayed, but hopes remain for hostage release

January 19, Kathmandu: A planned Gaza ceasefire has been delayed due to “technical field reasons” according to Hamas, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists on the prior release of hostage names. Despite the setback, hopes remain for a swift resolution and the eventual release of the hostages.

The ceasefire agreement brokered after a devastating conflict that began with a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th 2023 was initially set to take effect at 08:30 local time. The agreement outlines a phased approach, with the exchange of hostages a crucial step.

Under the terms, Hamas is required to provide the names of the first hostages they intend to release at least 24 hours before the exchange, which was scheduled to occur sometime after 16:00 local time (14:00 GMT) on Sunday.

The Hamas attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of 251 individuals to Gaza. Israel responded with a large-scale military offensive, leading to the devastating loss of over 46,800 Palestinian lives, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

While the delay is undoubtedly frustrating, both sides have expressed a commitment to the ceasefire agreement. Continued dialogue and cooperation are essential to overcome this hurdle and ensure the safe and timely release of the hostages.
