HoR passes special motion on loss of lives in Bhotekoshi flood

Kathmandu: A meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) passed a special motion on the Bhotekoshi flash flood that decimated the corridors of Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, taking a huge toll on humans and property on August 26.

The special motion presented by HoR Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal was passed unanimously by the HoR meeting today.

The meeting paid tribute to the Nepalis and foreign nationals who lost lives in the calamitous floods and expressed condolence to the aggrieved families and relatives.

Speaker Aryal wished speedy recovery to those injured in the floods. He drew the attention of the government and all other concerned agencies towards the urgency of sensitivity towards financial and psychological state of the flood-hit people and easy access of women and children to safe shelter, protection and essential health services.

The Speaker also said global rise of temperature was reinforcing climate change impacts- melting glaciers and glacial lakes. It is urgent to raise the issue of climate crisis in international forums, for Nepal has begun witnessing national security challenges owing to climate change.

The government needs raising loss and damage resulted with the climate change in the international level in a clear and pressing manner, according to him. “The Rasuwa disaster is a lesson to us. Preparedness should be a culture rather that a part of disaster management. Regular monitoring of glacial lakes and glaciers is essential,” he underscored.

The Speaker urged all three tiers of government, political parties, civil society, entire government machineries with the effective mobilization of resources so that rescue works could be intensified and displaced ones rehabilitated.

The HoR meeting observed a minute of silence in memory of those losing lives in the cataclysmic incidents. The lawmakers wished eternal peace to the departed souls. The HoR will meet next at 1:00pm Thursday.
