Health Minister approves National Strategy for palliative care for critically ill patients
Kathmandu: Minister for Health and Population, Pradeep Poudel, has approved the Nepal Palliative Care National Strategy 2025-2035, aimed at providing care and treatment for patients with life-limiting conditions.
According to the Ministry’s Secretariat, the strategy is designed to prepare both government and non-government health institutions to provide palliative care for patients suffering from long-term, life-threatening conditions such as cancer, heart disease, lung disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and kidney disorders.
While palliative care services are available for cancer patients in Nepal, other patients with complex, life-limiting health issues and their families have lacked access to such care. The newly approved strategy emphasizes the need for health institutions to provide comprehensive care, support, and guidance for these patients and their families.
The strategy also outlines plans to build capacity and enhance the skills of healthcare providers at all levels. Additionally, it aims to ensure the availability of necessary medications and quality services across all health institutions.
With the strategy’s approval, it is hoped that families, communities, and the state will be better equipped to support individuals facing complex health challenges. Ministry Spokesperson Dr. Prakash Budhathoki affirmed that the ministry will actively implement and advance the strategy.
