NC General Secretary Thapa reminds farmers’ issues
Patan (Lalitpur): General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, Gagan Kumar Thapa, has said the leadership elected from the Nepal Farmers’ Association’s general convention should be focused on the interests of farmers rather than being leader-centric.
Addressing the fourth central convention of the Nepali Congress’ sister organization, the Nepal Farmers’ Association, here Thursday, General Secretary Thapa, reminded, ‘The Federation should properly advocate for farmers’ rights and work for resolving their problems.’
The Farmers’ Association should think how it can contribute to the national economy by increasing production and productivity so that import of more than Rs 4 billion could be reduced, according to him. He encouraged the Association to create pressure on the government on farmers’ issues.
Similarly, Spokesperson of the Nepali Congress, Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, mentioned that even though two-thirds of farmers are engaged in agriculture, only a quarter of the country’s income has been achieved through it. He stressed the need to modernize agricultural sector and increase productivity by adopting mechanization.
In view of Congress leader and National Assembly Member Krishna Prasad Sitaula, economic changes in farmers’ lives would lead to the country’s economic prosperity. The coordinator of the Direction Committee of the convention, Ramesh Rijal, urged the Association members to unanimously elect the leadership.
