President Paudel departs for Azerbaijan to attend COP-29
Kathmandu: President Ramchandra Paudel has left Kathmandu this evening to participate in the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-29) being held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Devaraj Ghimire, bid farewell to him at the Tribhuvan International Airport’s VIP lounge.
Earlier, a unit of the Nepali Army offered a guard of honour in respect of President Paudel.
For the President’s farewell, the Deputy Prime Minister, ministers, members of parliament, senior officials of the Nepal government, heads of security agencies, and representatives of diplomatic missions in Nepal gathered at the airport.
At the invitation of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, President Paudel is leading a high-level Nepali delegation attending the conference.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Paudel will address the high-level session of the ‘World Leaders Climate Action Summit’ on November 12. During the conference, Nepal will hold a special high-level session under the leadership of President Paudel on November 13 to draw the world’s attention to its agenda.
Similarly, Nepal will be holding a special high-level session under the leadership of President Paudel on November 13 alongside the COP29. Moreover, Nepal will draw the world’s attention to its agenda in another high-level meeting on ‘addressing climate-related damage and loss in mountainous areas’.
The conference will also have a high-level meeting on “addressing climate-related damage and loss in mountainous areas”. During this meeting, Nepal will inform the participants about the damage caused by the floods and landslides triggered by unusual weather patterns in Melamchi, Mustang, Kanchanpur, Thame, Kathmandu Valley and other areas.
President Paudel is accompanied by his spouse Sabita Paudel. His entourage includes President Paudel’s environment expert Dr Parameshwor Pokharel, his secretary Abagya Paudel and his communication expert Kiran Kumar Pokharel. Furthermore, the delegation comprises the Secretary at the Office of the President Narayan Prasad Sharma, the Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Ministers of Council Krishna Hari Pushkar, Chairman of Rastriya Samachar Samiti Dharmendra Jha, and the Joint-Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Amrit Bahadur Rai, among others.
As a party to various conventions on climate change, Nepal is implementing a national adaptation action plan to be realized by 2050. The COP-29 begins on November 11 and ends on November 22. President Paudel is scheduled to return home on November 15.
