Lawmakers insist on prompt, effective implementation of resolution motion against digital violence

Kathmandu: Stakeholders have stressed the need for effective implementation of the resolution motion on addressing technology-facilitated gender-based violence endorsed by the National Assembly.

Speaking at a discussion on the resolution motion organised by the Women, Law and Development Forum (FWLD) here today, lawmakers Padam Bahadur Pariyar, Renu Chand and Roshni Meche talked about the significance of the document, underlining the need for its prompt implementation.

The lawmakers advised the government not to limit the resolution to paper but to ensure its effective enforcement. They stressed the need to address the growing incidence of emerging forms of gender-based violence resulting from the rapid advancement of information and communication technology.

These include abuse through social media and digital platforms, artificial intelligence (AI), data misuse, cyberstalking, deepfakes, digital surveillance, online harassment, character assassination, and unauthorised dissemination of private content.

NA member Chand emphasised the need to implement the resolution promptly for the management of social sites. Pariyar and Meche called on the government to show its accountability by creating a safer and technology-friendly society.

Sancharika Samuha’s Chair Kamala Panthi urged the government to effectively enforce the resolution, stating that its implementation would help ensure justice for survivors of technology-facilitated violence.

Similarly, FWLD Executive Director Sabin Shrestha was of the view that the effective implementation of the document would play a vital role in preventing digital violence.

According to Nepal Police data, 18,926 cases of digital violence were registered during the fiscal year 2081-82 BS.
