Bhotekoshi flood: 1,357 bodies recovered so far

Kathmandu: So far 1,357 bodies have been found in the areas affected by the Bhotekoshi flood, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said. Among the bodies found, human organs have also been discovered from various places.

According to NDRRMA, the identities of 102 bodies have been confirmed and handed over to their families. It has been reported that around 5,326 people are still missing after the flood. Among those unaccounted for, NDRRMA said 2,860 are from Rasuwa, 1,981 are from Nuwakot, and about 587 are foreign tourists.

Authority’s spokesperson Shanti Mahat said that so far, 13,583 people have been rescued and 6,827 people injured by the flood have received treatment.

“Among them, 327 were treated in various ten hospitals, 3,404 through the Nepali Army, and 3,096 through the Armed Police Force,” she said. According to the details shared by the Authority, 21,402 security personnel have been deployed, including 7,912 from the Nepal Police, 9,287 from the Nepali Army, and 4,203 from the Armed Police Force in the search and rescue operations in the aftermath of the disaster.

For rescue and relief, the Nepali Army has flown helicopters 1,157 times, the private sector from Kathmandu 129 times, and the Armed Police Force 203 times.

NDRRMA also stated that 39 holding centres have been set up in the affected areas, accommodating 3,533 people. Among them, 669 are in Rasuwa, 2,651 in Nuwakot, and 213 in Dhading.

The government has provided cash relief of Rs 10 million each in Rasuwa and Nuwakot, and Rs 5 million in Dhading. A total of Rs 13.5 million has been given as relief to 15 affected municipalities. In the affected areas, there is a stock of 50 thousand liters of diesel, 18 thousand liters of petrol, and 18 thousand liters of aviation fuel, and 457 gas cylinders have been provided as subsidies, according to NDRRMA. NDRRMA stated that electricity has been supplied to 78 percent of households in Rasuwa, 96.7 percent in Nuwakot, and 99.8 percent in Dhading.

The Authority said more than 150 staff have been deployed through the Ministry of Health to provide psychosocial counseling services for flood-affected people.
