Upper House MPs emphasize on bringing policy to be self-reliant in food grains

Kathmandu: Members of the National Assembly (NA), the upper house of the Federal Parliament, have urged the government to prioritise agriculture and create programmes to become self-reliant in food grains.

Speaking during the ‘special time’ of today’s NA meeting, they drew the government’s attention to making policies that prioritise agriculture.

Durga Gurung suggested that the government develop programmes that keep in mind the rights and interests of the poor, marginalised, and landless. Nara Bahadur Bista said that the appointment of vice-chancellors at universities should be transparent.

Samjhana Devkota called for creating an environment where we can be self-reliant in food grains and seeds. Mohammad Khalid emphasised that the questions raised about the holding centre should be taken seriously.

Bishnu Kumari Sapkota expressed the view that no political party should give children membership or use them for party purposes. Somnath Portel asked the state to apologise and take policy actions to eliminate caste discrimination.

Ranjit Karna pointed out that the provincial structure has weaknesses that need to be fixed and emphasised moving forward by addressing these weaknesses.

Rajendra Lakshmi Gaire called for the health insurance programme to be continued, and demanded solving the drinking water problem across the country, including in Madhesh Province, by ensuring one water tap per household.

Bishnu Bahadur Bishwakarma emphasised that the provincial structure should not be abolished.
