Home Minister stresses preparedness to reduce earthquake damage
Kathmandu: Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal has emphasized the need for preparedness to reduce earthquake damage. Speaking at a program at Bhugol Park, New Road, to mark the 28th National Earthquake Safety Day, he highlighted the importance of inter-governmental coordination and institutionalizing local government efforts.
Minister Aryal said mutual learning and practice can strengthen capacity, especially in civic awareness and building resilient cities. Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol added that communities are the first responders during disasters, and resilience requires coordination, knowledge exchange, and integrated planning.
Prem Thapa, Coordinator of KMC’s Disaster Management Committee, stressed the value of indigenous skills in constructing earthquake-resilient structures, citing Nepal’s ancient buildings that have withstood major tremors.
Officials from the Nepali Army, Police, Armed Police Force, municipal council, and disaster management organizations also attended the program.
This year’s Earthquake Safety Day is observed under the slogan: “Governments at all levels, preparedness of all citizens: Earthquake-Resilient Nepal, the responsibility from now on.” The day commemorates the devastating earthquakes of January 16, 1934, and has been observed annually since 2055 BS to raise awareness and promote safe settlements.
