EU-backed cold wave plan in Nepalgunj aims to protect 43,000 people

December 15, Nepalgunj: Nepalgunj City has begun advance preparations to mitigate cold wave risks as winter intensifies.

Considered a high-risk area, the sub-metropolitan city is expected to see 8,524 families, or nearly 43,000 people, affected this year. A consultation was held recently to update the Cold Wave Preparedness and Response Plan with technical support from the EU-funded Urban Disaster and Earthquake Preparedness Project (SUPER).

Representatives from key sectors, including search and rescue, health, education, WASH, shelter, and information management, provided inputs during the discussion.

Nepalgunj Mayor Prashant Bista said the city would effectively implement preparedness measures, stressing coordination among stakeholders. The plan has now been updated for the third time.

The SUPER project is implemented with financial support from the European Union, in partnership with UNDP, UNICEF, UN Women, Handicap International, and technical support from CDM Nepal.
