International Media Training on Dignified Menstruation kicks off
April 16, Kathmandu: A four-day international media training on Dignified Menstruation kicked off in the federal capital, Kathmandu, on Wednesday. A total of 17 journalists, including from Kenya, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal, are attending the capacity-building event hosted by the Global South Coalition for Dignified Mensuration.
According to organiser, Lal Chalaune, the event aims to sensitise participants about the concepts around Dignified Menstruation and reinforce policymakers towards its urgency through media advocacy.
Sapna Paudel, the programme head for the Coalition, said the applications for the training programme were sought through the announcements on social media platforms.
The host received applications from 20 countries around the world, it was informed. The participants were screened based on certain criteria such as content contributions to the international media/magazines and producing content centring on menstruation, and their ideas and understanding in a way to matches the objectives of the campaign for Dignified Menstruation.
According to a noted rights activist and writer Dr Radha Paudel, media has a significant role in strengthening the voice for dignified menstruation; therefore the host has been conducting training for journalists on Dignified Menstruation in Nepal and beyond. “More importantly, dignified menstruation is everyone’s business,” she asserted.
During the training, the participants who are from diverse genders and communities will be oriented on the concepts of Dignified Menstruation through human rights, feminist, and gender perspectives, it is said.
