Communications Minister says ordinance presented in the House will be passed

Kaski: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has said that the ordinance presented by the government in the House will be passed.

Inaugurating the 32nd anniversary of the Himalaya Eye Hospital in Pokhara today, the government spokesperson said that the ordinances should be passed as it promotes good governance and makes public services effective.

‘The ordinance will also help promote good governance as the country cannot develop without good governance,’ he said. Minister Gurung said that the ordinances have been introduced following the constitutional provisions as it was found that many reforms were needed in Nepal’s laws and regulations.

He said that since an ordinance cannot be brought while the parliament is in session, there is no need to discuss that the government brought the ordinance before the parliament began, bypassing the parliament. Minister Gurung also said that the Social Media Bill has been brought to prevent activities that weaken the nation, people, law and order, and national unity.

The government is not trying to curtail freedom of expression and press freedom, and that the penalty provisions in the bill could be discussed and amended. On a different note, Minister Gurung pledged to provide necessary support to the Himalaya Eye Hospital.

At the program, former chair of the hospital, Dr Dil Bahadur Chhetri, member of the Gandaki Provincial Assembly, Bhim Karki, chairman of the hospital management committee and president of Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh, Surendra Thapa Magar, medical director of the hospital, Dr. Babita Gurung, president of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Madhav Baral, and others emphasized that the Gandaki Provincial government should take ownership of the hospital for its stability.
