International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism being marked today
Kathmandu, Feb 12: The International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism as Conducive to Terrorism is being observed worldwide today, following the United Nations’ call.
On this occasion, inter-governmental organizations, civil society groups, educators, religious leaders, and the media are organizing a series of events and activities to raise awareness against extremism and resist terrorism.
Violent extremism conducive to terrorism poses a serious threat to peace and security, and is an affront to humanity, affecting people of all ages, cultures, religions, and nationalities, the UN stated.
The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 77/243, declared February 12 as the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism as Conducive to Terrorism (PVE Day).
This day brings together Member States, the UN system, and all relevant stakeholders—including civil society, religious leaders, the private sector, academia, and the media—to strengthen international resolve in addressing conditions conducive to terrorism, raise awareness on the threat of violent extremism, and renew commitments to collaborate in preventing its spread.
Preventing violent extremism contributes to the wider peace and security efforts of the UN system, supporting goals to prevent conflict and sustain peace.
The UN designs and implements targeted capacity-building initiatives to address the underlying conditions and drivers of violent extremism at global, regional, and national levels, with a focus on human rights, gender mainstreaming, and developing sustainable partnerships.
The UN Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact and its Working Group on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism Conducive to Terrorism play a crucial role in providing strategic guidance to UN efforts on PCVE, promoting coordination and coherence in supporting Member States, based on respect for human rights, the rule of law, gender equality, and youth empowerment.
The observance of PVE Day began in 2016 when UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon presented an action plan to the General Assembly on the prevention of violent extremism.
