Germany pledges “unwavering support” to Ukraine

May 15, Kathmandu: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday visited Germany to seek support in his country’s defence against Russia.

Germany pledged its “unwavering support” and unveiled a new military package for Kyiv worth € 2.7 billion ($3 billion).

Ukrainian forces have been training troops and stockpiling Western-supplied munitions and hardware to reclaim territory captured by Russia.

Berlin has become the second-biggest contributor of tanks, rockets, and anti-missile systems to Ukraine after the United States.

Germany’s continued military backing is expected to be vital as Kyiv prepares its offensive to retake ground in eastern Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russia reported that two of its military commanders had been killed in combat near the flashpoint town of Bakhmut. The head of Russia’s private Wagner mercenary group accused the Russian army of inaction.
