TU contributes over Rs 90 million for flood survivors

Kathmandu: The Tribhuvan University (TU) has contributed Rs 92.5 million to support post-disaster search and rescue operations, relief distribution and rehabilitation efforts for those affected by the August 26 Bhotekoshi floods.

A delegation led by TU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Bhola Thapa handed over a cheque for the amount to Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel at the latter’s office on Wednesday. VC Thapa mentioned the amount was collected through contributions from the salaries and allowances of the university’s employees and office-bearers.

The amount will be deposited into the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. According to TU, the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and Rector contributed one month’s salary each, while professors and administrative staff of equivalent rank contributed an amount equivalent to 10 days of their monthly starting salary.

Similarly, seven days’ salary was deducted from assistant professors, deputy administrators, section officers, instructors and equivalent teaching and non-teaching staff.

Likewise, chief office assistants, office assistants and equivalent staff contributed five days’ salary, while non-classified staff contributed an amount equivalent to two days’ salary, the oldest University of the country stated.

VC Thapa said the contribution was aimed at supporting post-disaster response efforts following the devastating flood, which struck Rasuwa district and affected several other districts, including Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan.

A recent meeting of the TU Executive Council decided to make the contribution.
