Govt to establish IoE constituent college in Madhes Province: Minister Pokharel

Kathmandu: The government has started the process of establishing a new constituent college of the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, in Madhes Province.

Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel said the college would be established to expand access to technical education and reduce the need for students from Madhes Province to travel to other provinces for engineering studies.

A large number of students from Madhes currently travel to Kathmandu and other parts of the country to pursue engineering education. This places an additional financial burden on students and their parents and creates other practical difficulties.

Minister Pokharel said the government has started identifying a suitable location for the new college. A special study committee will also be formed for the purpose.

Although no specific deadline has been set for starting classes, the government plans to begin academic programmes at the new college within the next three years.

The Minister said the new college would not be limited to traditional academic activities. It would also be developed as a centre for research and innovation.

At present, constituent colleges of the Institute of Engineering are operating in Pulchowk and Thapathali in Kathmandu, as well as in Dharan, Chitwan and Pokhara.

The proposed college in Madhes Province is expected to further expand the geographical reach of engineering education in the country.
