Indigenous peoples’ contribution to historic movement is significant: Vice-President Yadav

Kathmandu: Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav has lauded the indigenous peoples’ significant contribution and sacrifices to Nepal’s transformative historical movements.

Addressing the main celebration function organized by the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities, Federal Council Secretariat at Tundikhel, Kathmandu today on the occasion of the 32nd World Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Vice President Yadav said that the contribution of the indigenous nationalities have also been recognized in the Constitution and state mechanism.

He stressed that the main essence of the Constitution of Nepal is inclusive democracy, social justice and equal opportunities for all ethnic groups and communities in the country.

Stating that democracy, republic and federalism achieved in the country is deeply linked to the struggle for the rights of indigenous peoples, Vice President Yadav pointed out that since the Constitution has ensured the rights of indigenous peoples, Madhesi, marginalized and underprivileged communities implementing those provisions in practice is the need of the day.

“Inclusion should not be limited to slogans alone, but should be seen as proportional access to state policies, resources as well as education, health, employment and decision-making processes at every level,” said Vice President Yadav. He also expressed the belief that the country would take positive strides in every sector if the federal democratic republican governance system was further strengthened.

Similarly, Vice President Yadav mentioned that the traditional knowledge, skills and culture of indigenous communities living in harmony with nature are exemplary for the world today for in the wake of climate change and environmental balance.

The new generation should thus move forward embracing modern education, science and technology while preserving their indigenous language, culture and identity.
