Situation returning normal in Sunsari, all-party discussion pledge harmony, peace

Kathmandu: People facing trouble in Sunsari district following a clash between two groups last Sunday are witnessing a gradual return to normalcy.

The situation is returning to normal due to the unrelenting efforts of the government, local administration, security agencies and political parties.

Chief District Officer of the District Administration Office in Sunsari, Ishwori Prasad Aryal, said the security situation was returning to normal and further efforts were underway to maintain peace. Some of the affected local governments have played special roles in normalising the situation by organising all-party harmony meetings.

“Harinagar and Bhokrah Narsingh Rural Municipalities organised all-party meetings for restoring harmony. The meeting attendees agreed to make every effort to thwart the disruption to peace and order,” he said.

CDO Aryal further shared that the authority was holding discussions with the chairs and vice chairs of the affected local governments initially and even between both parties involved in the dispute.

The situation had become tense after a dispute arose between two groups last Sunday night. Even a person was shot dead in the clash. In response, the District Administration Office imposed an indefinite curfew and prohibitory order in the affected areas to prevent the situation from worsening.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Balendra Shah expressed his grief over the incident on Tuesday and vowed to provide justice to the families of the deceased, compensation to the victims and action against the culprits.

PM Shah made it clear that the death and injury of citizens due to firing by security personnel is a serious matter. An investigation was launched into it, and action would be taken against the perpetrator as per the law.

The government, as the PM argued, was seriously reviewing the entire incident and necessary decisions and corrective measures would be taken to prevent such incidents from repeating. He also urged everyone to stay away from whims, anger and revenge and make efforts for social harmony, mutual trust and tolerance.

The Ministry of Home Affairs also informed that it was relentlessly monitoring and coordinating the security situation in other districts like Banke and Kapilvastu in order to avoid untoward incidents of a similar sort. Even the district-wise security situation was reviewed after the Sunsari incident.

Similarly, an all-party discussion was held under the coordination of RSP president Rabi Lamichhane in Singha Durbar on Wednesday morning where nine political parties were unanimous to prevent unwanted activities and provocations.

They stressed mutual fraternity and social harmony. The leaders also issued a statement, underscoring the importance of peaceful dialogue and consensus to resolve disputes.

“We call on all sides concerned to put forth their demands and grievances in a peaceful manner,” the appeal stated. A consensus was built to immediately call all-party and all-side meetings at provincial, district and local levels to resolve the problem by forwarding dialogue to the grassroots level.
