Public empowerment key to fighting misinformation: U.S. Under Secretary Rogers

June 1, Kathmandu: Visiting U.S. Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Sarah B. Rogers has highlighted the critical role of public empowerment in defending against digital misinformation

Addressing journalists at a press meet in Kathmandu on Monday, Rogers emphasized the importance of technological freedom and pointed to the potential of trusted AI tools and deepfake detection technologies to help the public discern truth without compromising democratic liberties.

During her visit, Rogers also met with high ranking government officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Shisir Khanal and Information and Communication Minister Dr. Bikram Timilsina, to discuss strengthening economic ties and expanding digital access.

She underscored the bolstering of bilateral relations through the $550 million Millennium Challenge Corporation compact, which she described as a significant investment in Nepal’s energy future and regional connectivity.

Beyond technology, Rogers celebrated shared cultural and adventurous traditions at the Ascent Summit 2026, a signature event marking America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.She

She lauded the ongoing U.S.-supported restoration at Patan Durbar Square, praising the recruitment of traditional artisans to preserve the historic site.

As the two nations approach their 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year, Rogers reaffirmed that the United States remains a dedicated partner in supporting Nepal’s sovereignty, innovation, and mutual prosperity.
