133 inmates still at large after Bhimphedi prison break
Bagmati, April 26: As many as 133 inmates who escaped from the regional prison in Bhimphedi, Makwanpur, remain at large months after the incident.
The prisoners were among 440 inmates who fled the facility on September 9, 2025, after breaking through the prison walls during the Gen Z movement.
According to prison chief Subash Paudel, a total of 294 escapees from Bhimphedi have either returned voluntarily or been rearrested so far. In addition, 76 inmates who had escaped from other prisons have also been brought back.
Of the 39 foreign nationals who escaped, only 13 have returned to custody.
Paudel said 50 inmates who were recaptured from other prisons have been sent back to their respective facilities, while 22 are currently being held at Bhimphedi prison.
Spokesperson of District Police Office Makwanpur, Pushkar Bogati, said search operations have been intensified, with security personnel arresting escapees from various locations and handing them over to the prison authorities.
