Kathmandu Valley air quality turns very unhealthy as pollution rises
Kathmandu: Air pollution has increased again in the Kathmandu Valley, with air quality reaching a “very unhealthy” level.
According to the Air Quality Index (AQI), pollution levels that were around 92 on Tuesday afternoon rose sharply to 247 by 11 am today.
The AQI level falls under the “very unhealthy” category, which can have adverse health effects on the general public.
As per AQI standards, 0–50 is considered “good”, 51–100 “moderate”, 101–150 “unhealthy for sensitive groups”, 151–200 “unhealthy”, 201–300 “very unhealthy”, and above 300 “hazardous”.
Director General of the Department of Environment Gyanraj Subedi said a lack of rainfall, increasing drought, burning of agricultural residues, and forest fires have contributed to the rise in pollution. He added that without rain, dust and smoke remain suspended in the atmosphere.
Meanwhile, meteorologist Binu Maharjan of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said there is no significant rainfall expected for the next three days, with temperatures likely to rise further.
Authorities have urged the public to take precautions, especially children, the elderly, and people with respiratory and heart conditions, advising them to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and use masks when needed.
