NHRC urges to stop expression of hate speech
Kathmandu: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the authorities concerned to stop the hate speech that would affect the peace and security of the country.
The hateful expression would not only spread hatred in society but also can create challenge in law and order, stated a press release issued by the NHRC spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel.
The constitutional human rights body instructed the government to further consolidate law and order.
The NHRC urges the political leaders, candidates and general public to not make hate speech against the Constitution of Nepal, laws and international norms and values of human rights; use the human rights friendly language, with respect to others while using social media; not to make publicity of hateful expression and fully comply with the election code of conduct”, it is stated.
Likewise, the NHRC has drawn its attention to the allegations being made against one another by the responsible individuals affiliated to different political parties, hateful expressions and indecent accusations of late, especially when the March 5 House election is coming near.
Though Nepal’s Constitution and human rights related international laws have guaranteed freedom of expression and opinion, the matters capable to hurt the dignity of others and undermine law and order could not be accepted, it noted.
The human rights body has also stressed that a responsible person should be ever mindful of possible effects on other’s freedom of exercising rights while enjoying one’s rights. RSS
