Mechi Customs Sees 7.57% Rise in Imports, Exports Decline in Five Months

Bhadrapur, Jhapa, Dec 23: The Mechi Customs Office in Jhapa recorded imports worth Rs 20.14 billion in the first five months of the current fiscal year, marking a 7.57% increase compared to Rs 18.72 billion during the same period last year.

However, exports from the office fell during the same period, totaling Rs 10.71 billion, down from Rs 11.47 billion in the previous fiscal. Major exports include cardamom, tea, plywood, veneer sheets, broom grass, ginger, and iron sheets, while the main imports consist of petroleum products, readymade garments, vegetables, auto parts, cement clinker, cosmetics, coffee, plastic goods, and footwear.

The office generated over Rs 6.82 billion in revenue from trade activities during the five-month period starting from Shrawan, officials said.

Ishwar Kumar Humagain, Information and Customs Officer at the Mechi Customs Office, noted that the increase in imports reflects growing domestic demand, even as exports showed a slight decline.
