Supreme Court recovers 7,500 case files following arson damage

December 23, Kathmandu: The Supreme Court of Nepal has successfully recovered 7,500 case files that were previously damaged or feared lost due to arson during the “Gen-Z” protests in September.

According to court records, out of the 24,234 cases pending as of September 8, a staggering 20,034 case files were burnt during the unrest. Only 4,200 files of active cases remained safe. Additionally, approximately 197,000 historical archive files were destroyed in the fire.

Following the incident, the Supreme Court established a formal procedure to request copies of these files from the concerned parties and stakeholders. The court has set a deadline until the end of Poush for the submission of these documents.

Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Prasad Koirala confirmed that as of Sunday, a total of 7,535 files have been collected. Of these, 6,810 were gathered from the collection centre located within the Supreme Court premises, while 725 files were received through other channels.
