Madhes Province Chief Minister Sonal resigns

Madhes Province Chief Sumitra Subedi Bhandari has accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Jitendra Prasad Sonar ‘Sonal’ on Friday.

According to a press release issued by the Office of the Province Chief, Bhandari approved Sonal’s resignation in accordance with Article 169 (1)(a) of the Constitution of Nepal on the 22nd of Kartik, 2082 BS.

A statement signed by Secretary Shatrudhan Yadav mentioned that, as per Article 169 (3) of the Constitution, the current Council of Ministers has been tasked with continuing to perform the day-to-day functions of the provincial government until a new arrangement is made.

Sonal had assumed office as the Chief Minister of Madhes Province earlier this year. His resignation marks a new turn in the province’s political landscape, as discussions begin on forming the next government.
