Rasuwagadhi border reopens, Nepali truck drivers cross over to China

December 29, Kathmandu: The Nepal–China Rasuwagadhi border point reopened from Sunday after remaining closed for nearly six months due to flood damage. The first batch of trucks entered China Monday following the operation.

The crossing resumed operation following the completion of a Bailey bridge at Rasuwagadhi in Gosaikunda Rural Municipality–2, which was damaged by floods on June 24. Nepali truck drivers involved in cross-border transport travelled to Kerung on Sunday, with them crossing the border on Monday, said Rasuwa Chief District Officer Rajesh Panthi.

According to Rasuwa Customs Office Chief Tulsi Prasad Bhattarai, movement of people has started via the newly constructed bridge. From January 2, cargo vehicles and traders will also be allowed to cross the border.

Chinese authorities have stated that cross-border movement will operate on a one-way, alternating system for the time being. Due to ongoing road blacktopping works in the border area, limited hours and partial routes will be in effect until early January.

The Rasuwagadhi border had remained fully disconnected since floods swept away the Friendship Bridge last June, disrupting road connectivity between Nepal and China.
