Prime Minister calls for global partnership to tackle climate-induced disasters

Turkmenistan: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has emphasized the need to strengthen global cooperation and partnership to address the challenges arising from climate change.

Addressing a discussion session titled “Enhancing Adaptation Capacity and Resilience of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) to Climate-induced Disasters”, held during the Third United Nations Conference on LLDCs, Prime Minister Oli stated that although Nepal contributes very little to global carbon emissions, it is already suffering from the adverse effects of climate change.

He urged for coordinated efforts to tackle the challenges of sustainable development and reminded participants that Nepal’s melting Himalayan glaciers are posing both human and physical risks. In this context, he recalled the organization of the Sagarmatha Dialogue, initiated by Nepal with the concept of protecting the environment “from the mountains to the sea.”

Prime Minister Oli highlighted that Nepal has already prepared a long-term integrated adaptation strategy to reduce climate risks and stressed the need for support from international development partners for its effective implementation.

Citing the fact that the rising sea levels are linked to the melting of the Himalayas, he called on the global community to formulate an integrated climate adaptation plan from the Himalayas to the sea.

“The Himalayas are a natural recharge system. Therefore, global joint efforts are essential to prevent glacial melting and rising sea temperatures,” said Prime Minister Oli. “There is no alternative to accelerating global collective action through coordinated and integrated efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Nepal will continue to contribute meaningfully to this endeavor.”

Prime Minister Oli’s official engagements for the day at the conference have concluded.
