Success achieved through Congress–Communist collaboration: PM Oli

Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that Nepal’s major political successes have been made possible through the unity and collaboration between the Nepali Congress and the Communist movement during the country’s most difficult periods.

Responding to questions from lawmakers in today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Prime Minister Oli emphasized that collaboration between these major political forces has helped establish political stability, institutionalize democratic achievements, and drive development and prosperity.

He stated that this collaboration, envisioned by leaders like BP Koirala and Pushpalal Shrestha, continues to guide the country in a positive direction. “Political harmony and joint efforts have enabled us to overcome crises and build a foundation for lasting change,” he said.

Marking the memorial days of BP Koirala, Nepal’s first elected Prime Minister, and Pushpalal Shrestha, founding General Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal, Oli paid tribute to their contributions in ending autocratic rule and steering the country toward democracy.

Referring to their legacy, he urged lawmakers to focus on unity and reconciliation rather than differences and division. “Pushpalal, who dedicated his life to the welfare of the people, was denied the right to spend his final days in his homeland. However, the joint people’s movement of 2046 BS, led by the Nepali Congress and the United Left Front, realized his vision by restoring democracy and establishing a multi-party system,” he said.

PM Oli further noted that the reinstatement of parliament in 2063 BS—following the 2017 BS royal coup—and the subsequent abolition of the monarchy were key achievements of such collaborative efforts. “Today, a people-elected Prime Minister exercises the responsibilities of both head of state and head of government,” he added.

Highlighting the 2072 BS constitution as a symbol of renewed political harmony, he said the current government—formed through collaboration between the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and other parties—is based on the principles of unity, collaboration, competition, and coexistence.
