Nepal unveils vision for inclusive, ethical AI at Human Development Report launch

Kathmandu: Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has outlined Nepal’s ambitious AI roadmap during the launch of the 2025 Human Development Report titled “A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of AI.”

Speaking at the event organized by UNDP Nepal and Nepal Economic Forum, the Minister emphasized that artificial intelligence is now foundational, not just innovative. He said Nepal’s AI Policy 2025 is finalized and ready for Cabinet approval, aiming to ensure an ethical, inclusive, and rights-based AI ecosystem.

Key initiatives announced include the establishment of an AI Center and an AI Excellence Center, along with flagship projects like a Nepali Large Language Model (LLM) and computer vision systems for agriculture, health, tourism, education, and traffic.

The Minister also highlighted plans for data infrastructure, IT industry development, tax incentives for AI startups, and AI-powered skilling programs for youth. He said the upcoming Digital Nepal Framework 2.0 will drive transformation across all major sectors.

Calling for collective action, Minister Gurung reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building an AI-ready, people-first digital nation.
