Kami Rita Sherpa Sets New Record with 31st Summit of Sagarmatha (Mount Everest)

Kathmandu: Renowned mountaineering guide Kami Rita Sherpa has etched his name further into the history books by summiting Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) for a record-breaking 31st time.

The 55-year-old Sherpa reached the 8,848.86-meter peak at 4 AM on Tuesday, surpassing his previous record of 30 summits set last year.

Kami Rita, a legendary figure in the mountaineering world, first scaled Sagarmatha in 1994 while working as a support staff member.

Over the years, he has become one of the most accomplished high-altitude climbers, with his consistent achievements on the world’s highest mountain earning him global recognition.

Born in the Solukhumbu region of Nepal—the heartland of the Sherpa community, which has long been integral to Himalayan expeditions—Kami Rita’s climbing career has spanned more than three decades.

In 2024, Kami Rita made history by becoming the world record holder for the most summits of Sagarmatha, reaching the summit for the 29th and 30th times.

With his latest ascent, he has solidified his place as the holder of the most Sagarmatha summits by any individual.

The Nepal Tourism Department confirmed the new achievement, highlighting Kami Rita’s extraordinary dedication to mountaineering.

Despite his impressive record, he shows no signs of slowing down, with many in the mountaineering community continuing to look up to his as a source of inspiration.

Kami Rita Sherpa’s accomplishments reflect not only his personal determination but also the significant contributions of Sherpas to the success of Himalayan expeditions, particularly in high-altitude mountaineering.
