HoR Deputy Speaker Ranamagar calls on Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka

Kathmandu: The Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus, has stressed the importance of harnessing Nepal’s hydropower potential to meet the growing energy needs of Bangladesh and the whole sub-region and contribute towards achieving the goal of net-zero emissions.

During a meeting with Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Indira Ranamagar in Dhaka this afternoon, Dr Yunus also called for concerted efforts to boost economic cooperation with a particular focus on trade, connectivity, healthcare, and tourism, according to the Embassy of Nepal in Dhaka.

Prof Dr Yunus said that the cross-border cooperation was needed between Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and the seven states of northeast India in the areas of hydropower, health care and connectivity.

‘Matters of mutual interest, including trade, investment, energy, connectivity, tourism, and cooperation at regional and multilateral forums were discussed in the meeting,’ stated the Embassy.

During the meeting, Deputy Speaker Ranamagar expressed her satisfaction over the growing cooperation between Nepal and Bangladesh, about advances made recently in the power sector and an enhanced level of educational, touristic, and people-to-people linkages. She also underlined the need to further leverage the transformative potential of friendship and solidarity with specific goals and targets set for boosting economic ties.

Chief Adviser Prof Dr Yunus noted that Nepal is among the countries with a significant number of ‘Three-Zero Clubs’ inspired by his vision.

According to the Embassy, the two leaders reflected on the similar development challenges facing Nepal and Bangladesh and discussed the associated opportunities and laid emphasis on working together in both traditional and emerging areas of mutual concern for the benefit of both countries and peoples.

The Deputy Speaker was accompanied by Nepal’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ghanshyam Bhandari, and Deputy Chief of Mission Lalita Silwal. Principal Coordinator for SDGS Affairs Lamiya Morshed and Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, Ishrat Jahan, were also present on the occasion.
