PM Oli announces international-level Buddha Jayanti Celebration in Lumbini Next Year

May 12, Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stated that the philosophy and teachings of Lord Buddha have become increasingly vital in addressing the growing unrest and conflicts worldwide. Addressing the 2569th Buddha Jayanti and Lumbini Day 2082 main ceremony in Lumbini today, he emphasised that only Buddha’s philosophy, rooted in peace, compassion, and humanity, can curb the escalating global violence and conflicts, not weapons.

Referring to tensions between neighbouring countries India and Pakistan, PM Oli noted, “They were on the brink of war, but due to collective pressure, they have stepped back for now, though issues persist. Similar problems exist in other countries. From this sacred land of Buddha, we appeal for global peace.” He highlighted the dangers of producing advanced weapons capable of attacks by land, sea, and air, asserting that only Buddha’s teachings of peace, compassion, and humanity can counter such threats.

PM Oli reflected on Buddha’s life, noting that he renounced personal luxury and left his palace for the welfare of humanity, urging people to draw inspiration from his sacrifices. He recalled the historical struggles to keep Buddha’s teachings of peace, compassion, and goodwill alive, emphasising that Lumbini is not only a sacred site but also the origin of Buddhist philosophy. PM Oli called for global efforts to establish peace in line with Buddha’s ideals.

Expressing concern over delays in the Lumbini Master Plan, PM Oli stressed the urgency of completing it swiftly. “The Master Plan has been delayed, and we must now prioritise its completion,” he said, adding that Buddha’s message of peace is essential for individuals, families, societies, and nations. He underscored the need to spread this message to counter global unrest.

PM Oli also highlighted the establishment of Lumbini Buddhist University to advance research and dissemination of Buddha’s teachings, urging it to focus on this mission. He further stressed the need for the Lumbini Development Trust to ensure translations of key speeches at such major events.

Recalling the 2016 Buddha Jayanti, when a storm disrupted the event attended by then-President Vidya Devi Bhandari and foreign guests, PM Oli shared how it led to his announcement to build a 5,000-capacity international conference hall in Lumbini. “Work began, but I was out of office for a time. The hall was later started, but it’s not the ecosystem I envisioned. It must be completed soon, and the next Buddha Jayanti will be held in a fully equipped hall,” he affirmed.
