House of Representatives urges government action on key national issues

Kathmandu: During today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, lawmakers raised several pressing concerns, calling on the government to address critical national issues including rising unemployment, weak governance, corruption, and black marketing.

Lawmakers criticized the government’s lack of direction and leadership, highlighting the prolonged absence of a governor and accusing the administration of engaging in political power games. They demanded that the governor’s appointment be based on merit and free from political bias.

Concerns were also raised regarding the Nepal Electricity Authority. Lawmakers alleged that despite previously operating at a profit, the Authority is now being pushed into financial loss, possibly as a pretext to justify privatization.

As the pre-monsoon season begins and with forecasts predicting heavy rainfall this year, lawmakers emphasized the urgent need for disaster preparedness. They urged the government to take timely measures for disaster risk reduction, including repairing roads—particularly key routes connecting the capital—constructing embankments, and building emergency infrastructure to protect lives and property.

The issue of public health was also highlighted, with lawmakers demanding that all imported fruits and vegetables be tested for pesticide residues. They expressed concern that the health of consumers is at risk due to the importation of untested agricultural produce.

Additionally, the lawmakers called for the swift enactment of legislation in line with previous agreements made with teachers, urging the government to address the grievances of dissatisfied educators.

The meeting also continued discussions on the government’s annual policies and programs for the upcoming fiscal year.
