Devotees throng Bhimsen Temple in Bhaktapur

Bhaktapur, March 13: On the occasion of Phagu Poornima, devotees have thronged the Bhimsen Temple in Bhaktapur.

Marking the festival, a large number of people visit the Bhimsen Temple in Ardash, Yachhen Bhimsen Temple in Yachhen, and Tachapal Bhimsen Temple in Dattatraya for darshan and worship.

It is a religious belief that worshipping Bhimsen on Phagu Poornima opens new sources of income and helps businesses flourish.

The festival of Phagu is celebrated by worshipping Bhimsen and eating samaya baji, a Newari delicacy.

Also called Bhising Pooja in the local language, the festival sees local women dressed in haku patasi, a traditional Newari costume, worshipping Bhimsen, savoring samaya baji, and walking around the neighborhood celebrating Phagu, the festival of colors.

Later this evening, a large wooden linga (symbolic representation of masculinity) on display at the Tachapal Bhimsen Temple in Dattatraya will be taken around the city, washed in the river at the Brahmayani Temple, and placed back in the temple, marking the conclusion of this year’s Phagu festival.
