Single font developed for writing 125 languages spoken in Nepal
Kathmandu, March 13: A single font has been developed to create a common writing system for the 125 languages spoken in Nepal.
The font was created under an agreement between a task force formed by Nepal Academy and Awaran Publications. The task force was established to study the development of a common writing system for Nepal’s languages.
Artist Ramesh Poudel shared that the font, named ‘Dubo,’ was designed based on the task force’s report. The font was handed over to the Academy on Tuesday.
Poudel, Managing Director of Awaran Publications, said that ‘Dubo,’ which consists of 224 characters, is easy to use despite having a layout different from Devanagari and Unicode.
At a program organized at the Academy on Tuesday, linguists discussed and presented their views on the proposed font.
On the occasion, linguist Prof. Dr. Madhav Pokharel expressed confidence that the font would help address issues in the writing systems of many languages spoken in Nepal that lack scripts.
Academy Chancellor Bhupal Rai said the font was developed with the help of an expert task force and that this initiative would be highly beneficial.
Chairperson of the Language Commission, Dr. Gopal Thakur, said the proposed font would bring uniformity to the writing of all languages spoken in Nepal.
Coordinator of the task force, Dr. Amrit Yonjan Tamang, stated that the font would facilitate writing in Nepal’s spoken languages.
