Fog and cold wave hit Terai-Madhesh region, disrupting daily life

January 6, Kathmandu: Dense fog and a cold wave have gripped the districts of the Terai Madhesh region including the central Terai districts of Bara and Parsa, severely affecting daily life. Temperatures have plummeted, leading to widespread discomfort among residents, particularly the elderly and children.

The prolonged fog has reduced visibility and caused temperatures to drop significantly. According to Laxman Kanel, Assistant Meteorologist at the Simara Meteorological Office, both Bara and Parsa have been experiencing a steady decline in temperature. On Saturday, the maximum temperature in Birgunj was recorded at 15 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 9.5 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 10.5 degrees Celsius.

In response to the crisis, the Birgunj Metropolitan City has set up several bonfires at public places like Narayan Hospital, New Bus Park, Ghantaghar Chowk, Maiasthan Chowk, and Murli Chowk to provide relief to the public.

Ganesha Aryal, the Chief District Officer of Parsa, reported that the district administration is distributing firewood and warm clothing to vulnerable families to help them cope with the cold weather.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged the public to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the cold and fog. The department has warned that the combination of cold weather and fog can pose health risks.
